You Aware of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome?

Do you notice of your baby's sleeping position? There is the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) if the sleeping positions of your baby are not safe. Many parents nowadays worry about the risk of SIDS because no one really knows what causes it. SIDS is the leading cause of death of infants between one month and one year of age.

If you always put your baby sleep on his/her stomachs, then you should start not to do that. The babies sleep on their stomachs tend to have higher chances die from SIDS and this is the findings of researches. Advice from experts is to put your child sleep on his or her back. When you find that your toddler rolls over in the night and is sleeping tummy down, you should adjust his sleeping position to the safety one.

Child's safe bedding is the important part that parents should take note to reduce the risk of SIDS. It is advised that the bedding should not be too soft and it shouldn't rise up around or cuddle around the child. There are many SIDS victims have been discovered in soft, thick bedding, therefore it's good for parents to avoid soft bedding for babies.

Parents should always check the babies' face whether the face is covered by any blanket, bag or pillow. Make this a good habit and make sure your baby's blanket is light enough to easily get out from under. If your baby is taken care by grandparents or caregivers, try to raise their awareness of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Educate them for your baby's safety and let them place your baby back for sleeping.

Another thing that parents should take not is make sure the room temperature is just fine for your baby. If your baby is too warm, he may not want to sleep or couldn't sleep well. You need to ensure they are not in hungry or wet too. When babies are in the comfort environment or positions, they tend to have good quality sleep and reduce the chance of roll over during the sleep.

Tips to get your baby go to sleep

1. Try different night time approaches - Your friends' night time parenting might be useful or sometimes might not be useful for you. Be flexible and try different approaches if the sleep program isn't work for your baby. Always follow your heart and you would then work out the right night time parenting style for your baby.

2. Location of your baby's sleep - Find out where is the most comfort place to sleep for your baby. Some babies like to sleep in their own crib in their own room, some prefer to sleep in crib in their parents' bedroom, while some babies like to sleep on their parent's bed. You could have various sleeping arrangements at various stages of your baby.

3. Consistent bedtimes - Try to develop the bedtimes patterns for the baby. Once the babies get the patterns or consistent bedtimes, they have going to sleep rituals and usually go to sleep easier and stay asleep longer.

4. Quiet in the bedroom - Reduce the happen of sudden noises while your baby is sleeping because they would easily awaken with the sudden noises. A noiseless sleeping environment will keep your baby sleep better.

5. Conditions of baby - Always let your baby in a good condition before put them to sleep. For example, clean the face and teeth for them, change wet or soiled diapers and change them into comfortable pyjama would make them feel more comfort to sleep mood.

You can get a baby monitor to help you get the information about your baby's movements and checking on the baby's breathing. It can also help you keep an eye on your child even in the dark. Although it can't prevent SIDS, but it still a good tool for parents.

Our daughter was born in 1967, I remember the doctor said "all babies leave this hospital on their stomachs." Meaning they need to sleep on their stomachs. How times have changed but it seems there are not as many sids deaths as there were in the 60's. So I guess they are right about what they say now.

Good hub.

Thanks so much for this very informative hub. I also heard that air circulation is very important--like having a fan on to circulate the air in the room. Have you heard anything about this? Thanks again for putting together this very important hub.

Hi Moonlake,

Thanks for your comments. I think those findings only reminded people that babies sleep on their stomach tend to have HIGHER CHANCES die from SIDS. In fact, the real reason might due to the combination of many factors. So, are you a happy grandparent now? :)

Hi Sparks,

Yah, for me the air circulation is also very important. My Baby Moon couldn't sleep well without a fan in the room. Sometimes the weather is too warm, we also on the air con for her to sleep more comfortably. The sleeping quality of a baby is crucial, otherwise they will have bad mood or bad temper for the next day. :)
